Mr. David Pearce

Role:  PhD student

After studying Engineering Science at Worcester College, Oxford University, David went on to work for QinetiQ as a research scientist working on blue-skies research on stealth / counter stealth.  Next David went on to pursue his own work in Artificial Intelligence as a potential commercial venture. Then after working as programmer for a management consultancy in London, he moved to Manchester where he decided to return to academia completing an MSc in advanced computing at MMU.

The MSc project involved hand recognition using neural networks and modular neural networks to teach a computer to recognise a hand.

David’s current project is on semantic similarity of sentences. Expanding existing models beyond only using nouns to improve their effectiveness. Amongst the possible benefits would be the eventual creation of automatic chat room monitoring and automatic e-mail response.

Hobbies include playing board games (achieving World Champion in some) and athletics / running.
